Las Gaviotas is 45 minutes south of the border; 8 minutes south of downtown Rosarito and 2 minutes north of Puerto Nuevo. From San Diego, California, take Interstate Highway 5 or Interstate 805 south. This will take you to the San Ysidro, California border crossing (at Tijuana). There will be various freeway exit signs along the way including one reading “Last U.S. Exit.” If you are planning to walk across the border, then you’ll leave the freeway at this exit, find a parking lot, and proceed to enter Mexico (Tijuana) on foot. If you continue driving, the freeway takes you right into Mexico. There are two roads that will bring you to Rosarito Beach. We recommend that you take the toll road (cuota) . This road is well maintained, it gets you to Roarito faster and you are driving along the beautiful ocean coast. Also, The toll highway is also patrolled by the “Green Angels,” a mobile mechanic that will assist you in the event you have mechanical problems. There are solar powered call boxes located about every two miles along the toll road. If you need help just pick up the phone and a bilingual operator will provide assistance. After crossing the border, traffic will merging from the right from another road so try to stay in the middle lane. But, immediately after the merge you will want to be in the far right lane to exit right. You’ll see a sign for Rosarito/Ensenada. You will exit right, follow all the signs that direct you to the Road to Rosarito and Ensenada. After making the right turn, the road parallels the border for about two miles, then heads up and down a steep hill where you will be alerted to exit to the right. The sign for this road will be "Toll Road" or "Scenic Road to Rosarito/Ensenada, Route #1 (Toll Road)." Next, stay in the left lane and the road will veer left, so just continue to follow the signs to Rosarito/Ensenada. The right lane will drop down to Playas de Tijuana, the beach community of Tijuana. Since we are going to the Rosarito stay left and follow the road as it curves left. Two miles later you will pass through the tollgate. Tolls are less than $$2.10-2.50; toll areas all have clean restrooms. (Picture #16-18) Now you can relax and enjoy the scenery. You’ll be driving on the toll road for about 15-20 minutes. You will start to see signs for Rosarito. There are 4 exits into Rosarito that you will pass. You will not exit into Rosarito Instead, go through the second tollgate (at Rosarito) and travel six more miles (approximately 10km), drive to the next exit south. ( No Photo) This exit will read, "Puerto Nuevo/Calafia Exit." Get off the toll road here. Take the free road heading north (back right off exit). Las Gaviotas will be 1 mile ahead on the ocean side (left) of the road. Show your permits to the Guard and head down to the street closest to the ocean. |
